What is gender envy?

Gender envy is a term used to describe a feeling of discontent or desire to be the opposite gender from one's assigned sex at birth. This feeling may manifest as a strong longing to have the physical characteristics, social roles, or societal privileges typically associated with a different gender.

Gender envy is often experienced by individuals who identify as transgender or non-binary, as they may feel a disconnect between their internal sense of gender and the gender they were assigned at birth. It can also be experienced by individuals who do not identify as transgender but still feel a deep sense of longing to have the experiences or attributes associated with a different gender.

Gender envy can cause distress and confusion for individuals as they navigate their gender identity and expression. It is important for those experiencing gender envy to seek support from mental health professionals, support groups, or other resources to help them better understand and cope with their feelings.
